How To Select Optionals

Conduct a thorough analysis of your strengths and weaknesses, reflecting on subjects that captivated your interest during your academic years. Opt for a subject that you are genuinely passionate about, as this enhances your likelihood of achieving top scores. Prioritize subjects with the highest scoring potential.

• Consider selecting a subject closely aligned with your undergraduate degree. For instance, if you pursued Psychology for three years, your depth of knowledge in this field surpasses that of others. Similarly, if your academic background encompasses diverse subjects like Engineering, opt for the one you find most comprehensible.

• Look for optional subjects with overlapping content with the four General Studies papers, such as History, Geography, Law, Political Science, and International Relations.

• Prior to finalizing an optional subject, thoroughly review its syllabus. Proficiency in a language does not necessarily translate to expertise in its literature or other intricate subject matter. Familiarize yourself with the subject’s nuances and gauge your proficiency levels before committing to it.

• Assess the availability of study materials, as it significantly influences your preparation. Limited study resources may necessitate substantial investments of time and money in acquiring requisite texts. Furthermore, attempting to grasp the subject matter from scratch without proper guidance can impede your ability to score well.

• Analyze statistics of subjects yielding high scores in previous years and identify any parallels with your preferred subjects.

• In cases of indecision between two or three subjects, solve practice papers or review previous years’ question papers. Compare your performance across subjects, taking note of both scores and the time taken to solve each paper.

By diligently considering the aforementioned factors, you can make an informed decision that optimizes your chances of success. Choose based on your strengths rather than succumbing to peer pressure or external advice. Tailor your selection to capitalize on your strengths, paving the way for excellence in your examinations. Best of luck!
